Mexico City is the densely populated, high-altitude capital of Mexico. With a population of over 9 million people, it is larger than New York City. It is a bustling metropolis consisting of an unending array of grandiose avenues, unique and colorful neighborhoods, and an endless array of food markets/restaurants/stands.
We fell in love with this city and have been back to visit since. While we anticipated feeling overwhelmed and unsafe, we experienced the complete opposite. The subway system was cheap and immaculately clean. We felt safe exploring the neighborhoods and parks every step of the way. There is plenty of gorgeous green space to find some peace in the midst of the crowds.
Here’s a possible itinerary for a 4-day kid-friendly trip to Mexico City in April:
Day 1: Get Acclimated & Explore Coyoacan
Day 2: Chapultepec Park & Anthropology Museum
Day 3: Teotihuacan & Centro Histórico
Day 4: Kidzania & Roma Norte
Day 5: Xochimilco Canals & Mercado de Sonora
Overall we found Mexico city reasonably priced. Don’t forget to carry cash as you will find A LOT of street vendors selling delicious food and/or colorful textiles you’ll not want to miss out on.
Exploring outside the city:
Guanajuato: Known as the most beautiful city in all of Mexico, Guanajuato was an absolute highlight! Rainbow-colored buildings, cobblestone streets, and live performers roaming about, it is truly out of a fairy tale.

Guanajuato Mexico is a special place. We were lucky enough to explore this amazing city on foot for over a week!
We parked our van and spent every second we could walking the city streets. The intricate tunnels in this amazing city is something we never expected Mexico.
The cathedral of Guanajuato was stunning. It also sat in the center of town so it helped navigate us around Guanajuato all week!
We went a little bit outside of the town of Guanajuato to explore the mines. We were blown away that Mexico had something like this to explore. Mining to us naive travelers from the United States is not something we expected to explore!
The night life topped it off for us. The signing, the dancing and kindness in the streets of Guanajuato was beyond our expectations.
